The Advancement of Depth of Your Creative Writing
Over the span of English 1110, with the use of media and storytelling concepts introduced to me, I have grown to become more accepting of more “current” writing. With the use of its many possible utilities in order to enhance the reader’s perspective and insight into the world that is being drawn out in front of their eyes, it always yields a high reward. Via the use of non-traditional “objects” placed inside the text, you are able to guide readers toward the story you want them to see. The storytelling practices introduced in class assignments help to improve the depth of the script being written.
The most obvious idea and topic that should be brought up was the digital storytelling project. While it was my first time positing fictional content for a public blog, it was not the first time for me ever writing a blog. In my past, I have made blogs that were very instructional based. The writing itself was not for a reputable blog site, but a “private” one man army blog. By this, I mean that I wrote blogs for my own enjoyment. While wrote them, I was very straightforward with the things that included. I made sure to only include the bare necessities so that readers would be able to get in, and out of the reading quickly. With the digital story telling project, I was introduced to the idea of including hyper-linking, photos, and sounds to the blog, in order to let the reader enjoy their stay(at that particular posting).
One big difference that I have always noticed (but this class helped to reinforce) was the straight difference between print medium and a digital one. With print, unless the author/publisher decided to include pictures (which many books/articles rarely do for formal writing), you are given “full control” on how you perceive what you are reading. This gives the reader an extremely large probability of misreading something and immediately blaming the author for it. This class has helped to teach (again, mainly through the digital storytelling project) that the author/blog writer can guide the reader towards the thought process that they would prefer, while still allowing them to make up the details along the way. For me, that was the best part of the class. With the knowledge gained, you no longer have to be general with your writing. Given the power of “guidance”, you can show the reader, rather than tell them what to think. This was a very useful tool as we wrote for the rest of the class.
The community of readers involved in the reading of the digital story project would mainly have to be either “tweens” or young adults. Due to the nature of it, along with the writing style and massive amounts of “other” digital media, those would be the people that would enjoy it more. While the digital element does help with grasping the topic, for some older readers, a little flair here and there is a nice touch, but too much more starts to take away from the story. In regards to the paper that I wrote for the final project, the targeted audience would be much different. It would mainly consist of an older and more mature group of people. I say this because while there might not be any “digital” element, or even any kind of visual portions, it does take into account the different kinds of writing tools that we developed in class.
By way of introducing certain class assignments that oriented itself with the theme of storytelling via digital medias, we were able to grow our own writing. In the end, summing up all the characteristics of the engagement of media, coupled with the storytelling practices within class assignments, the topics of this class have proven themselves to be vital and imaginative skills which can be used in my future writings. These skills will help to better the writing with which the topic will be located on. I believe that these skills are definitely helpful, and I look forward to using them in the future.

I agree with your point on how this type of digital writing enhances the text. I think that was the key point of this class and how to modernize our writing through technology. I also agree that this type of writing allows the author to have more infulence the reader and guide them, like you said. This is extemely important for the author to have that kind of power over the reader because it allows the author to help the reader percieve the text in the way they want them to. I furthermore agree with your statement that this skill of writing will help with writing in the future.

ReplyDeleteI agree that this class definitely helped me learn writing skills that I will continue to use in the future. My own blog was about how I had come to learn to take the reader into account more while writing. Whether it is an analytical paper, creative writing assignment, or blog, the main focus of a writer should be to keep the reader engaged. That is one of the major points I will take away from this class.
ReplyDeleteWhile I agree with you that the class has taught me a lot, I also disagree with you on some parts. Digital media definitely brings a lot to the table. Hyperlinking, videos, pictures all add depth to a piece of writing that physical writing just doesn't have. I do believe though that when an author tries to tell the reader everything it takes away from the engagement that a reader gets from novels. When I read, I love to interpret things on my own account. When the author leaves a little ambiguity, I find that it allows me to make the story a little more personal. I can imagine things a little different than others. Then when I discuss the novel, other readers may see things differently but it makes for engaging conversation and in my opinion that is not a bad thing. Overall though, I agree that digital media definitely has a lot of intriguing and unique things that come with a digital story or essay.
I agree with Alexander that digital media adds great depth to writing. While I do not write blog posts myself, I do spend a fair amount of time on sports blogs online and I find that it is a great form of entertainment and medium of spreading information. I think that the main difference between online media and ink and paper writing is the connection it gives the reader to other people with the same interests. For example, instead of reading an article about Ohio State's upcoming Spring Game in the paper and then being done with the article, I can read the article online, talk to others that may be going to the game who also read the article, discuss ticket prices and times, and speculate on how our players will perform. I think that this is one of the many grea benefits of online writing.
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with you with your argument because writing the digital story was the first time I have even done something like that too and it greatly enhanced how I now read text online. It feels like its just more than reading an article. The author actually wants you to be a part of the story and you are the one being talked to. This class has helped me be more open minded when reading digital medium because now I do not pass judgment before reading. It has enhanced my understanding of what digital medium are about and how I can work with them in the future.
